CogKnit was founded by Christine Cuskley, who has spent two decades studying and working across education, psychology, linguistics, and English language in the UK, US, and Europe. Her research focuses on the origins and evolution of language, and so is inherently interdisciplinary. This led to a unique network of highly qualified and curious researchers, rigorously trained in the academic sector, that make up the CogKnit consultant crew. We aim to make domain-specific technical competence accessible, while valuing disciplinary expertise and open collaboration.
CogKnit consultants are mostly trained in the academic sector, where many of us still work. What we have in common is that we've spent years learning how to figure things out - often building or using new tools, figuring out answers to questions no one has been able to answer before, or no one has even asked. This means we're good at understanding the shape of a variety of problems, and puzzling out how to solve them. Our substantial collective experience means we may already have the expertise to do what you need. But if we don't, we do have the expertise to figure it out for you. Every one of us has experience working across diverse disciplines, so we don't just slap our favorite solution onto every problem - we know how to work with you to respect the unique needs of your project and find solutions that fit.
We can apply modern AI and machine learning solutions to a project that needs it - in general, much of what we do may involve automation to some degree, and would have been considered AI a few decades ago. However, in terms of modern generative AI, we don't consider this to be a viable solution to every single problem, or even most of them. We may use AI if it makes sense, but we never use AI-generated code or text out of the box. In general, our ethos - grounded in our background in cognitive science - is that human expertise is still better at solving most complex problems than generative AI. AI is a tool that can be useful, and one we are able to apply as needed, but it isn't our first stop solution.
We have expertise in Python, R, JavaScript, cloud hosting, and both SQL and NoSQL databases. We use (and providing training in) Github, and aim to make code open source whenever possible. We can use a variety of tools depending on a client's needs and resources, and aim to work with clients based on any existing pipelines they use, or resources provided by their institutions.
In your initial free consultation, we'll scope all the elements of your project and create custom quote. This will be based on a combination of how long it will take, how soon you need it, and on the tools or services necessary to complete/sustain the project, which may come at additional cost (e.g., custom domains, data storage, etc). Your custom quote will break down the total costs in terms of your consultant's time on different project elements, and other costs associated with the project for transparency. We aim to provide a detailed quote that will allow you potentially engage us for part of a project in the first instance, and decide on other parts later. Overall, our quotes are not based on a guess of how much you might be willing to pay for something you don't know how to do. We calculate costs based on what it will take to get the job done, including the substantial value of our consultants' time.
